Blair Turgott insists his job is to give Ian Hendon a problem as he bids to win a place in the Leyton Orient team.

The O's winger has had to settle for a place on the bench in every league match this season since moving to the club this summer.

But Turgott scored a wonder goal in last week’s victory over Stevenage and set up Saturday’s winner at Newport County for Dean Cox as he pressed his claim for a spot in the side.

Turgott said: “When you’re on the bench it’s sometimes hard for the manager to change it when you’ve got a winning team. But for me it’s just about trying to give the gaffer a problem and when I get my opportunity to show I want to be playing.

“I’m not just here to sit on the bench. I’m here to play as well and it’s good I can help the team get results.”

He added: “The boys who have been starting have done brilliantly so I’m not here to bitch about anyone.

“I think at the end of the day whether I play or am on the bench I’m just trying my best to help us get wins. It’s the gaffer’s decision but it’s all I can do.”

The 21-year-old former West Ham United youngster has had a nomadic football career so far with loan spells at Bradford, Colchester, Rotherham and Dagenham & Redbridge before a short-term deal at Coventry City last season.

But being reunited with head coach Hendon, who he worked with at Upton Park, could be the move which helps him realise his potential.

Turgott said: “It’s good to have a manager that trusts you, especially at my age. I’ve been out on loan and I think sometimes the manager doesn’t really know too much about you. Maybe he’s seen you a couple of times to bring you in on loan but doesn’t fully know your game in and out.

“But I think the gaffer here knows my game and he’s put his faith in me by bringing me on in tight games. That’s only good for me and gives me more confidence. Hopefully I can repay him with performances I put in when I do get my chance.”

Orient are top of League Two after winning their opening four matches and Turgott admits it gives everyone a lift even at this early stage.

He said: “Of course it’s good looking at the table but it’s still early doors. We’ve got 46 games in the season and ticked off four so we still have 40 odd to come. We’ve obviously set ourselves a target for ten games and still have to reach that so there’s a lot more to do but it’s good watching the box and seeing you at the top.”

Turgott added: “We’ve got a 100 per cent record and teams are going to want to beat us so we’ve got to be on our mettle. I think that can only be a good thing for us. We can’t see it as pressure.

“If you want to get out of this league that’s what you’ve got to be doing.”
