Youth coach Errol McKellar described Leyton Orient’s charity match on Sunday as a wonderful occasion but says the most important aspect is getting the message across about the dangers of prostate cancer.

Leyton Orient legends defeated a Men United XI 4-3 in a charity match in aid of Prostate Cancer UK at Brisbane Road.

Martin Ling took charge of the Orient side against Harry Redknapp’s opponents in a match arranged by the O’s youth coach.

McKellar, who hopes to hold another charity match at the club in the future, said: “It was absolutely brilliant. We wanted to raise awareness of this serious problem among men. It affects so many families and we got a great response from so many household names and Orient legends.

“The occasion was wonderful. We had Barry Hearn back as chairman and Matt Porter as chief executive. It was a great way of helping get the message across.

“Raising money is one thing but for people to get tested is the important factor.”

McKellar, who overcame the disease after having an operation to remove his prostate four years ago, offers discounts at his garage in Hackney if customers get themselves checked out.

“Someone has to go out and make a statement because it is a silent killer,” McKellar said. “It is a difficult subject but men need to talk about it. Women go to the doctors but men need to make sure they make an annual visit each year. Once a year you take your car in for an MOT so what’s the difference with the body?”
