Waltham Abbey moved into the third round of the Essex Senior Cup on Tuesday after completing a 3-1 win against Heybridge Swifts, who they will face in league action on Saturday.

Abbey broke the deadlock in the opening period through defender Matthew Attard and it was an advantage they held until the interval.

Paul Wickenden’s side doubled the lead in the second period through John Docker before Swifts pulled a goal back.

There was to be no comeback however, as Harry Elmes netted Waltham’s third to secure their place in the third round.

There was late disappointment for Abbey on Saturday as a 90th-minute goal from Shaun Welford meant their game against Cray Wanderers ended in a 2-2 draw.

Ben Hart had fired the Abbots in front before Welford netted his first equaliser of the afternoon shortly after the restart.

Jason Hallett struck for Abbey for a second time and it looked enough to secure the three points until the dying moments when Welford completed his brace.
