West Ham United have signed Marseille midfielder Morgan Amalfitano for an undisclosed fee on a one-year contract with the option of two further years.

The 29-year-old midfielder spent last season on loan at West Bromwich Albion, impressing for the Baggies.

His contract could be extended for another two years if he meets certain criteria, according to Jack Sullivan, son of Hammers co-owner David Sullivan.

Speaking to the club's website, Amalfitano said: "The manager explained to me how the team plays and how he needs me. I explained to him where I prefer as my position in his team.

"I prefer to play behind the striker, but last year with West Brom I played on the right. I like to cross the ball too, but I can also give through passes from behind the striker."

He continued: "I enjoyed my first year in English football and for that reason I have come back and hopefully I can improve again. The first year was good for my experience and I will try to help West Ham now by giving my best and continue to improve in this league. I like this country and this is the best league."

Amalfitano had been linked with a permanent move to Upton Park earlier in the summer after returning to the Stade Velodrome at the end of last season and at one stage, the Hammers were believed to have seen a £2m offer accepted.

The Baggies had signed the Nice-born midfielder with a view to a permanent move last season but following a change of management, elected not to take up that option.

A one-cap French international, Amalfitano made 31 appearances and scored four times for Albion last term.

Amalfitano becomes West Ham's ninth summer signing.
