PUPILS at a primary school were awarded by the mayor of Waltham Forest for their speeches about British values.

St Saviour’s Primary School in Verulam Avenue, Walthamstow, gave pupils a homework task over the summer on what it means to be British.

The first prize winners form each year read their stories to Cllr Peter Herrington, who awarded them with certificates and book vouchers at a presentation on Friday, September 23.

Assistant Head, Kate Dingle, said: “I think it is important for the pupils to have tolerance and understanding of diversity.

“It is part of our curriculum that they are taught about democracy, respect for others and individual liberty.

“The winning pupils used their own ideas and own experiences in their speeches.”

School Head, David Ogle, added: “It was very important for our children to understand the British value of democracy by having a member of council there.

“Their behaviour was excellent and we are grateful to the Mayor for giving up his valuable time.”
