The family of a young father struck and killed by a train has urged witnesses to come forward.

Asif Ali, 33, was hit by a train at Gants Hill station just before 5.30pm last Thursday (April 21).

Although Mr Ali’s death is not being treated as suspicious, police still want to speak to anyone who was on the eastbound platform at the time so they can establish how he came to be on the line.

A spokesman for his family said: "We are backing this police appeal and are reaching out to any witnesses to come forward.

"Any information however minor would be hugely appreciated and should be reported to the British Transport Police.

The father-of-one and business studies teacher at Leyton Sixth Form College has been described as “much-loved and respected” by his colleagues and students.

Principal Kevin Watson said he would be missed with “enormous affection by everyone who knew him.”

The college’s Islamic Society has set up a crowd funding appeal for the Ali family and has already managed to collect £3,070.

Anyone who was at Gants Hill station at the time and saw Mr Ali is asked to contact British Transport Police on 0800 40 50 40, or text 61016, quoting reference 257 of 28/4/16.
