Work is underway to turn a Leytonstone school into a multi-million pound state-of-the-art learning facility.

Buxton School, in Cann Hall Road, is getting a huge revamp that will see their current buildings demolished to make way for modern classrooms.

The nursery, primary and secondary will be housed in separate zones in one huge building, allowing for shared use of facilities.

Alongside the brand new classrooms the new build will also boast a nature garden and four multi use games area pitches.

There will also be more spaces for students and staff to park bicycles.

Executive headteacher Kath Wheeler described the new build "as the missing piece in the jigsaw".

She said: “I’m absolutely delighted that work is now underway on the construction of what will be a fantastic addition to the local community.

“Our children and young people work tremendously hard and deserve only the very best learning opportunities that match the educational standards we set here at Buxton."

Mrs Wheeler says that there will be no disruption in the classrooms as the new campus is being built on the old playground and sports pitches.

She said: "This new building is the missing piece in the jigsaw that will turn this school into a world class institution capable of equipping our pupils for life and work in the 21st century."

She confirmed work on the primary school is due to be finished by November 2016.

The original school site will then be demolished and turned into outside play and sports facilities.

Mrs Wheeler added: "We are extremely lucky because the site is so huge that the work can be carried out with zero disruption to the classrooms.

"Work is being carried out very quickly.

"Primary school pupils who join us next September will have use of the new building within three months right through to when they finish aged 16."

The new build will also extend provision and increase available places at the nursery.

She added: "With the pressure on primary school places and the need to expand adequate childcare, we hope this expansion will help us to support further parents in the local area."

Buxton is among 537 schools across the country being rebuilt under the £4.4 billion Priority School Building Programme.
