Over 11,000 residents flocked to a Walthamstow field yesterday to celebrate the best of Asian culture.

The free Waltham Forest Mela attracted people of all ages as crowds were entertained with dancers, singers and activities.

Crowds on Chestnuts field were treated to a line-up of live acts live acts including Navin Kundra, Alaap, Jazba Dance Troupe, SK1 and the 515 Crew featuring Chirag and Shama.

The William Morris activities stand was busy all day with residents taking the opportunity to discover how William Morris was influenced by South Asian embroidery, and creating their own embroidered gifts to take away.

The free event is part of Waltham Forest Council’s ‘Get Together’ events programme, which also includes the Big Weekender festivals and the Walthamstow Garden Party.

The Chingford Big Weekender takes place in Ridgeway Park on Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 August. The Saturday will feature a fantastic live music line-up with artists including ABC, Boney M, N-Trance and Gwen Dickey (Rose Royce).

The Sunday will feature a Family Fun Sports Day, where you can take your pick from a huge list of sport activities from basketball to bouncy castles, canoeing to cricket, and much more.
