Children’s centres in Redbridge labelled outstanding have won praise from the Chief Inspector of Ofsted

Sir Michael Wilshaw wrote a letter to the council, last week, congratulating the borough on the success.

In March, staff at three children’s centres were hailed as “passionate" and "totally focused" following an Ofsted inspection.

The report gave an ‘outstanding’ score to Redbridge West Group 2, which includes the children’s centres of Orchard and Ray Lodge in Woodford Green and Oakdale in South Woodford.

Approximately 2,915 children aged under five-years-old live in the area served by the group with 96 per cent of parents with children two and under accessing services.

Both Oakdale Children’s Centre in South Woodford and the Ray Lodge centre in Woodford Green won high praise after inspections.

Sir Wilshaw said: “The judgement of ‘outstanding’ means that you are exceptional and significant elements of your work are exemplary.

“I do not underestimate the considerable hard work, expertise and commitment it takes to achieve outstanding provider status.”

“Please accept my warmest congratulations on achieving this very high standard of practice…my thanks for all you are doing to raise standards and improve lives.”

Few children’s centres nationally are given the outstanding grading.

Cllr Elaine Norman, cabinet member for children and young people said both centres make the borough proud.

“Our children’s centres have become a one-stop shop for young children and parents, providing access to family health care, advice and guidance about bringing up children, early education and childcare,” she added.

"I am incredibly proud of this achievement and it is made all the more special by the letter received from Sir Michael Wilshaw. I would like to thank all the staff involved for their incredible effort.”
