A group of campaigners, neighbours and friends will attempt to prevent the "vicious" eviction of a single mother and her two children today.

Members of Unite Community Waltham Forest, Focus E15 Mums and the Radical Housing Network are gathering to challenge bailiffs expected to visit a property in Elphinstone Road, Walthamstow.

The resident, named locally as Charlie Avcil, has two young children and is said to have complex health needs which should entititle her to Local Housing Allowance.

But the payment has reportedly not been paid and her landlord is allegedly attempting to remove her from her home.

By trying to prevent the eviction, campaigners say they hope to buy Charlie more time for a medical assessment.

Eleanor Firman, of Carr Road, said the eviction is totally unacceptable.

“Nobody should be thrown on the street like this, it is simply vicious," she said.

"Who wants to live in an area where people are treated like this?

"It's a friendly area but every year my neighbours and others like them are thrown out its like clockwork and so predictable.

“Property prices have doubled since I moved here a few years ago and it's time to stop this exploitation.

“Everywhere people complain about the benefits bill but its greedy landlords that are to blame.

“I love the community spirit around here but these landlords give Walthamstow a bad name.”

A dozen campaigners have arrived outside the property so far but bailliffs are yet to arrive.

More to follow.
