The introduction of extra trains have been described as a ‘drop in the ocean’ to solve the problem of frequent arguments on overcrowded trains through Waltham Forest.

Over the last year incidents of shoving and arguing have increased on the Barking to Gospel Oak line, according to the Barking Gospel Oak Railway User Group, with one of the most shocking incidents occurring when a schoolboy was pushed from the train,.

A witness said at 7.29am on November 19 the train was packed solid when the child was ‘crushed’ by commuters forcing their way onto the train.

He then fell onto the platform.

Following the incident the child was left crying on the platform.

Morning and evening arguments have become a ‘regular occurrence’ on the line which stops at Leyton, Leytonstone and Walthamstow.

On Monday Transport for London introduced four extra trains at peak times.

TFL is also delivering five-carriage trains on East London and North London routes which have space for an extra 170 customers in each carriage.

Glenn Wallis, BGORUG secretary said the group has welcomed the extra services announced by TFL this month “The 17:28 service from Gospel Oak provides welcome relief for evening commuters and it should ease overcrowding over a 20-30 minute period of the evening peak.

“While welcoming these extra trains believes they are a mere ‘drop in the ocean’ to what is required to relieve overcrowding “The eight train two-car diesel fleet is now almost fully deployed and BGORUG requests to remove 12 seats and provide more handrails have been refused.

“TfL say no relief can come until line is electrified and that is now running two years late.

“BGORUG would prefer to have a 10-minute interval service in the busiest hour of the morning and evening peak and risk 20-minutes gaps should a train break down.”

There will also be extra trains over the Christmas period.

The last train will run on Christmas Eve at 21.33pm from Barking and two minutes later from Gospel Oak.

There will be no service of Christmas Day and Boxing Day with replacement buses running in some areas on Saturday 27.

The first trains on New Year’s Day will run from 8.48am.
